Helvetica, sans-serif;"&gt;You don’t have to abuse drugs or have a gambling habit to struggle with addiction.&lt;span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"&gt;&amp;nbsp; &lt;/span&gt;Have you ever been so involved in a book or video game that you completely shut out the world around you? Have you ever spent an entire day obsessed about what you were going to eat after work? Have you ever been talking about one topic so passionately that your listeners’ eyes glaze over? Have you ever had family or friends tell you that (fill in the blank) seems to be all you care about?&lt;span style="mso-bidi-font-size: 12.0pt;"&gt; &lt;o:p&gt;&lt;/o:p&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"&gt;  &lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"&gt;Some people, due to environmental factors or brain chemical imbalances, tend to be more prone to exaggerate everyday behaviors and turn them into something unhealthy.&lt;span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"&gt;&amp;nbsp; &lt;/span&gt;What do you do if you know you’re vulnerable to these behaviors?&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;ol&gt;&lt;li&gt;&lt;span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"&gt;Stay away from the dangerous stuff.&lt;span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"&gt;&amp;nbsp; &lt;/span&gt;If you know you’re prone to excess, avoid alcohol, drugs, even cigarettes.&lt;span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"&gt;&amp;nbsp; &lt;/span&gt;Combining addictive substances with addictive personality is a sure recipe for disaster.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;&lt;span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"&gt;Have an accountability partner.&lt;span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"&gt;&amp;nbsp; &lt;/span&gt;Whether it’s a spouse, sibling, or best friend, have someone in your life who can tell you the truth about your behavior when it gets out of hand.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;&lt;span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"&gt;Indulge, but set limits. If you know Oreos are your weakness, you can still eat them, just take a serving and put the package away (or have someone hide it).&lt;span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"&gt;&amp;nbsp; &lt;/span&gt;This is easier when you’re not alone.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;&lt;span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"&gt;Or stay completely away. If an activity doesn’t contribute to your well-being, and takes you away from your &lt;span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"&gt;friends and family, you may have to avoid it and all environments where it is available, when feasible.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;&lt;span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"&gt;Set goals. If you have a direction for your life, and are committed to the steps it takes to get there, it’s harder for an addiction to become primary in your life.&lt;span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"&gt;&amp;nbsp; &lt;/span&gt;Addiction tends to fill a void, so fill your life with good things first.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;&lt;span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"&gt;Consider working with a life coach to guide you and help hold you accountable for goals  while steering you clear of behaviors you want to change.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/li&gt;&lt;/ol&gt;&lt;span style="font-size: 12pt;"&gt;&lt;span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"&gt;Having an addictive personality means you may be able to focus completely on a project in a way others cannot.&lt;span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"&gt;&amp;nbsp; &lt;/span&gt;If that question causes you to shrug or get anxious, you might need a coach.&lt;o:p&gt;&lt;/o:p&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-size: 12pt;"&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-size: 12pt;"&gt;Everyone has dreams.&lt;span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"&gt;&amp;nbsp; &lt;/span&gt;Everyone has interests and passions they would like to dedicate more time to pursuing.&lt;span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"&gt;&amp;nbsp; &lt;/span&gt;Few people would say, “I like myself, my job and my relationships just as they are.&lt;span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"&gt;&amp;nbsp; &lt;/span&gt;I wouldn’t change a thing.”&lt;o:p&gt;&lt;/o:p&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-size: 12pt;"&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-size: 12pt;"&gt;The problem most people have in achieving their dreams is that they lack the knowledge, skills, perseverance, or confidence to move forward in setting new goals and meeting them.&lt;span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"&gt;&amp;nbsp; &lt;/span&gt;I say “most” people because some dreams may be unreachable due to a lack of talent or resources- such as a dream to perform on Broadway, play in the NBA, or own a castle in Scotland.&lt;span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"&gt;&amp;nbsp; &lt;/span&gt;However, many dreams that seem unreachable may simply require uncharacteristic determination to realize.&lt;span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"&gt;&amp;nbsp; &lt;/span&gt;&lt;o:p&gt;&lt;/o:p&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-size: 12pt;"&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-size: 12pt;"&gt;A life coach, mentor, accountability partner, or friend can offer encouragement, support, and resources when you have a goal or dream that you want to accomplish.&lt;span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"&gt;&amp;nbsp; &lt;/span&gt;In fact, your chances of success are greatly increased when you have a support system:&lt;span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"&gt;&amp;nbsp; &lt;/span&gt;people who believe in you and want to contribute to your goals.&lt;span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"&gt;&amp;nbsp; &lt;/span&gt;&lt;o:p&gt;&lt;/o:p&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-size: 12pt;"&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-size: 12pt;"&gt;“Nothing that’s worthwhile is ever easy,” says Nicholas Sparks.&lt;span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"&gt;&amp;nbsp; &lt;/span&gt;If you want to get out of your box and off the life treadmill, you have to be willing to make sacrifices.&lt;span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"&gt;&amp;nbsp; &lt;/span&gt;You may need to get up early to go to the gym or cut out television so you can study for a degree.&lt;span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"&gt;&amp;nbsp; &lt;/span&gt;You may have to take a hard look at ways you have been sabotaging your own success.&lt;span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"&gt;&amp;nbsp; &lt;/span&gt;You may have to invest your own resources into people and programs that will build you and your skills.&lt;span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"&gt;&amp;nbsp; &lt;/span&gt;&lt;o:p&gt;&lt;/o:p&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-size: 12pt;"&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-size: 12pt;"&gt;If you are already working toward a goal, keep up your motivation by remembering what truly matters to you and why you want to achieve it.&lt;span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"&gt;&amp;nbsp; When we think in terms of money or toys, we think more is better. If I want to be richer, I need to have more money.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;In the greater scheme of life, however, being rich is a matter of having an abundance of what we value. It isn’t the money itself, but what money can buy that represents what you value. Could it buy you independence from the working world? Could it buy opportunities for your children? Could it buy more time with new gadgets? What really makes your life rich?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Most people would say that it is the relationships, creative pursuits, and compelling causes that bring richness to life. Toys and trips are great, but only when there are people to share them with. Believe it or not, it is easier to build true richness into your life than to build material wealth. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;How can you become richer? When an experienced gardener begins to plant new seeds, she doesn’t just stick seeds into the old garden beds. The soil is hard from a long winter, and the nutrients have been all used up. Dead leaves and old grass litter the ground. The soil has to be turned, and have nutrients added, such as fertilizer or compost, to make it useful for growing new things. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Do you feel hard and all used up? Does life feel like an ironic hamster wheel? How can you get some new life growing? Take a tip from the gardener. Is there something dead crowding your life? Are there things you do or commit to that either aren’t your passion or aren’t matched well with your talents? Get rid of them! Clear the way for better things.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Turn the soil. Soften up. Take in the smell of your coffee, the feel of your shirt, the sound of rain on the window. Breathe deep. Opportunities to grow are all around you. Take a moment to listen, to reflect, to consider. What do you feel created to do? How can you incorporate that into your life? &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Did you find some seeds? Maybe an idea or a thought came to you as you drifted off to sleep. Plant the seeds. Add some fertilizer. Nurture the sprouts to life. Allow your life the brightness and color that a growing garden represents. You have the capacity to enjoy true riches. It seems simplistic, but a lot of people are wrapped up in the past and opening old wounds, going between the bitterness of lost chances and the regret of bad choices. As far as moving forward, however, none of that matters. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;One step anyone can take toward achieving any goal- whether it’s weight loss, parenting, career achievements, or anything- is to discover where you are today and accept that it is what it is. You don’t have to be happy about it or proud of where you are. In fact, the fact that you are dissatisfied with conditions today is what is going to motivate you to change and make steps toward your goals. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Are you overweight? So what? So are millions of other Americans. Admit to yourself if you are not in the physical condition you want to be. Do you feel guilty for neglecting your children? Admit that you haven’t been the parent you want to be. Are you stuck in a job that isn’t a good fit for you? Admit that you’re not happy about the present circumstances. Now, what are you going to do about it?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The second step is committing to change. It is up to you whether you want to remain where you are, reach toward a higher goal, or change directions. It doesn’t matter if your spouse is nagging you or your boss is threatening you. If you want to have a better life or to be a better person, you have to be willing to take responsibility for it. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Thirdly, take one step. Don’t try to crash diet the first day. Take one step. Trade in soda for water. Eat fruit instead of candy. Walk 10 minutes a day. When you’ve mastered that step, take the next step. It may not be the fast track, but it will pave the road for lifetime change. Commit to family meals once a week. Polish your resume. Take one step in the right direction, and before you know it, you’ll be in a whole new place. Warm your body and soul.&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;Turn up the lights.&amp;nbsp; Even if you don't have an official Seasonal Affective Disorder diagnosis, light therapy helps with alertness and mood.&amp;nbsp; Keep bright lights on in the rooms you spend the most time in, including your office.&amp;nbsp; &lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;Catch a rainbow.&amp;nbsp; Brightness also comes in colors.&amp;nbsp; Be sure to have color in your wardrobe every day.&amp;nbsp; Consider using some down time at home to paint or redecorate a room.&amp;nbsp; Fresh flowers, even some inexpensive daisies or carnations, can make Spring seem much closer.&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;Do it differently. Variety really is the spice of life.&amp;nbsp; Get out of the house and try a new restaurant. Take a class or learn a new skill or hobby. What do you do when you feel tapped out, and the idea mill has dried up?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Creative people have methods they use, consciously or unconsciously, to give their minds the maximum capacity to think creatively and generate new ideas. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;• Take time to think freely. This may be lying in bed before falling asleep, during a morning walk or run, in the shower, or during a long commute. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;• Exercise your imagination. The more you use your imagination, the better it works for you. Visualize your success. Ask yourself, “What would happen if…?” Fantasize about the impossible.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;• Do something new. Your brain’s neurons start firing when it has to learn something new. Read something different, volunteer, try a new exercise class, or start a new hobby. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;• Create. Paint, knit, write, carve, cook… the result doesn’t matter. It’s the process that gets the right side of your brain active.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;• Chill out. Creativity flourishes in a relaxed atmosphere. Take a walk, meditate, find a quiet place, breathe deeply. Put your worries aside for awhile and de-stress.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;• Get back to nature. Spend time appreciating the colors of the season, the sound of water churning, or the changes during sunrise or sunset. Get inspired. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;• Immerse yourself in creativity. Go to the theater or an art museum. Pick up a classic piece of literature or poetry. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Whether creativity is a job requirement, or you just need a fresh perspective, these are methods that “sharpen the saw” as Stephen Covey would say. Without a clear sense of where you are going, you are not going to get there (at least not very quickly and not without struggle). &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Let me tell you about Jim.&amp;nbsp; When Jim first opened his dry cleaning business, he wanted to provide reliable, dependable dry cleaning service and he wanted to make a comfortable living. What Jim realized early on is that he&amp;nbsp;not only wanted to differentiate himself from the competition,&amp;nbsp;but he wanted his business to reflect his&amp;nbsp;passion and values.&amp;nbsp; He had to create a&amp;nbsp;clear vision for what the business stood for.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Jim took the time and clarified his business vision for himself and his customers to include non-tangibles like “treating customers like family and having a personal relationship with as many clients as possible.” He also knew that being successful for him meant his employees had to truly enjoy working there and he wanted them to feel like they were part of something bigger. Jim changed is vision from “dependable, reliable dry cleaning service” to running a family-style business where customers and employees appreciate each other and treat one another like family. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Jim didn't stop there, though.&amp;nbsp; Having defined his vision, he worked to make it a reality.&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;Jim now adds weekly employee meetings to his schedule to get their input, and throws employee BBQ’s at his home whenever he can.&amp;nbsp; He also invites loyal customers to pick up slices of banana bread when they come in. Between answering the phone, writing emails, running to meetings and returning messages it’s a wonder anything gets done during the day. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;As a self-employed professional, I get hundreds of interruptions every day and it leaves me feeling stressed. It’s as though I did not accomplish one important thing that day! Is there anyone who feels the same way? &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;So what do you do? Some things that really help me through the frustration are:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Make a list.&lt;/strong&gt; I know a lot of people are not big on “to do” lists but I find them very helpful. After jotting down on paper the important things I want to get done for the day, I feel free. I know I won’t forget what needs to get done and I can choose which items on my list I want to cross off first. Whether it’s writing a proposal for a client, paying invoices, putting an estimate together or teaching a training session, I know that at the end of the day I can look back at my list and know there are a number of things I have accomplished. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Don’t answer every phone call.&lt;/strong&gt; While I know it’s sometimes easier to pick up the phone and respond to an issue immediately (rather than play phone tag for days to come) often it just doesn’t pay. When I find I’m focused and in the moment, getting interrupted stops my train of thought and throws me off-track. Decide at the time if it makes more sense to entertain the interruption or to continue what you were doing.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Schedule meetings close together.&lt;/strong&gt; I like to make sure I have certain days where meetings are not scheduled and I have entire days or blocks of time when I can get things done. If I have to run from client to client every day of the week, I’d never accomplish a thing.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Consider your routine.&lt;/strong&gt; Are there things that you find you are doing that are time-wasters? Or do you do things during the day that inspire and energize you? Pay attention to what you do throughout the day and keep in mind which activities should stay and which could be eliminated. Begin a routine of motivating, energizing activities throughout the day to keep you moving forward. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I’m very interested in hearing how life is treating you. We spend hours each week at work and many of us bring work home. With all the time we spend working, it’s no wonder we want to feel fulfilled in our jobs. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I spent years working at various jobs I didn’t enjoy - some of which felt like torture. Others were a blast! After paying my dues at several low level positions in fields I wasn’t interested in, I was lucky enough to land a job I loved at an advertising agency and was promoted several times within the company.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;But even as great as that and later jobs were, I still questioned what I was doing. At some point in everyone’s life, we begin to consider if what we are spending our time on is making a positive impact in the world. After 18 years in the agency world of marketing, I wondered if my time might be better spent using my skills helping others rather than increasing the bottom line for another large corporation. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;After spending unfulfilling years working at a direct mail agency, I began to question how important was it we sell another pair of pants to a buyer that probably doesn’t need them. It was at that time I began my quest to search for what was important to me. My deep soul searching revealed that I didn’t necessarily need to abandon my years of experience to help the world and make a positive impact. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;That’s when my second career working with non-profits began. Today as a marketing consultant and professional life coach, I continue to use my marketing skills to make a difference in the world. I use my expertise educating the public about important issues that affect us all, encouraging individuals to live their dreams, and working with many other organizations who support those in need. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;If you want to make a change in your life or career, don’t be afraid to look at options. Write down everything you appreciate in your life or write about plans you’d like to make for yourself in the future. Give yourself time to explore different ideas and see what comes to mind. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;7. Spend time with an animal. Even if you work in the city, there’s always wildlife to be found. Listen to the birds chirping, walk over to a nearby dog park or visit a local restaurant with a fish tank. Animals have such a calming influence over us.&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;It’s a great way to learn how to take life one moment at a time.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;8. Reflect on pleasant memories. If you’re working in an office you’ll have a photo or a memento of family or friends. Take a moment to think back about that day and reminisce about the “good times.”&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;9. Call a friend or make a date for yourself to do something fun. If you know there’s something wonderful to look forward to at the end of the day or week, it will make getting through the daily grind much easier.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;10. Enjoy a small bite of dark chocolate. I didn’t say go out and grab a huge candy bar and eat the whole thing, but a small amount of organic dark chocolate will do wonders for your mood. More phone calls to return, more emails to craft, more industry trend reading to do, more work, more responsibilities, more “to do” lists and less time to accomplish it all. What do you do when work’s got you down?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Lately, I’m finding people running around like crazy. They go from work to home, to driving the kids around and taking care of the family, to cooking dinner and doing the laundry. I hear them say there’s no time to slow down because companies are down-sizing so work comes first. Putting in overtime, bringing work home, working on weekends all seem to be today’s reality. Does this sound familiar? What does one do when the thought of taking on&amp;nbsp;one more&amp;nbsp;project sends you over the edge?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Here are some ideas to get you through to the next moment:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;1. Breathe. Stop what you are doing and take several deep breaths. On&amp;nbsp;the inhale, hold for a moment, then slowly release your breath. Breathing deeply will help give you clarity, focus and a moment of peace. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;2. Listen to music you like. Maybe it’s a quick beat or perhaps it’s a slow, romantic tune – music helps distract you from the hectic pace and puts you in a different frame of mind.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;3. Unless you’re driving or doing something requiring intense focus, close your eyes and meditate for a few minutes. If you’re not into meditation, try a visualization exercise. Take a few deep breaths and imagine yourself in a beautiful, peaceful place far away. Maybe you are on a hammock on a warm sunny beach or perhaps you find yourself skiing down a cool mountaintop. Take a vacation from your present reality and visualize another calming environment. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;4. Take a walk or move around. Any form of exercise from walking and jogging to doing neck rolls, push up’s or leg lifts will stimulate blood flow and help relieve stress. A walk around the building and moving your body is a great way to break the pattern of going from one task to the next.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;5. Get out in nature. Being outdoors in nature is a cure-all for me! You believe you are ready to move into something BIG, but feel you need a little help getting there. Then life coaching can certainly help. Many believe that life coaching is for everyone but not everyone is a successful life coach. So how do you know how to find a coach that is right for you? &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The one word answer is "explore." &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Many life coaches offer a free, one-time sample session. This is your best way to find out if you connect with your coach. Investigate many coaches and ask lots of questions. Use the sample session to work on an issue that you've been grappling with and see how you feel at the end of the discussion. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Ask yourself: &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;ul&gt;&lt;li&gt;Did I feel motivated to take some action? &lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;Did the coach give me the space and freedom to explore areas that I was interested in exploring? &lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;Was the coach's style something that I was comfortable with? &lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;Do I feel that I can trust this person? &lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;Did the coach push me into areas that I was unsure about? (Although you might be resistant, this is something you want to happen). &lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;Did the coach ask good, thought-provoking questions?&lt;/li&gt;&lt;/ul&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;div&gt;Not every sample session will give you the time to find all the answers you are looking for, but it will provide you with some initial thoughts. After your sample session, feel free to ask the coach how he works, where she was educated, how many hours/years they have coached for and anything else that is important to you.
